On Sunday night I stayed in an Art Deco hotel, something I’ve always wanted to do. With Claridge’s and the Savoy being slightly – ok very – out of my price range, I decided to stay at the Crowne Plaza John Lennon Airport Hotel in Liverpool. We were looking for somewhere around half way from home (we were visiting family in Scotland), in a city that had enough to do to justify the stop.

The four-star hotel is situated in the former terminal building of the airport (Grade 2 listed), built in the 1930s. It opened as a hotel in 2001, after laying derelict for over a decade. The interior of the hotel is kitted out in deco-inspired design, and also has some original features from the airport, such as the payphone in the lobby.

Unfortunately you enter the building through the less grand, modern façade, although you are greeted by a replica de Havilland aeroplane, which is a nice touch.

Our room was very comfortable, and had many interesting features, in particular the prints on the walls and the design of the bathroom. There were some nice extras in our room beyond the usual tea, coffee, biscuits and obligatory chocolate for your pillow. As well as complimentary mineral water, we received two miniature sleep aids from This Works – lavender scented Deep Calm Pillow Spray, and Breathe In, a eucalyptus and frankincense infused rollerball for your pulse points. These were lovely and retail at £10 for the set.

I didn’t have much to complain about beyond the bedside lamps which weren’t working, and a couple of things which required more attention to detail.

If you love Art Deco or need a hotel close to the airport, it’s definitely worth a stay, and prices are very reasonable – our room was £70 per night.
